How Lithium Batteries Produce Power

Lithium-ion batteries generate electricity through a chemical reaction. As lithium ions move between the battery's positive and negative electrodes through a liquid electrolyte, electrical current is produced.

This electrochemical process works efficiently at normal temperatures. However, as temperatures drop, the movement of lithium ions slows dramatically.

The colder the battery becomes, the harder it is for those ions to move, which means the battery can no longer deliver power as effectively.

Cold Weather Reduces Battery Performance

Most lithium-ion batteries begin losing performance well before temperatures reach freezing.

Typical performance reductions are approximately:

  • 32°F (0°C): Noticeable reduction in available power.

  • 14°F (-10°C): Battery may provide only 60–80% of its normal usable capacity depending on the battery chemistry.

  • 0°F (-18°C): Significant loss of capacity and voltage under load.

  • Below 0°F (-18°C): Many batteries struggle to supply enough current for motors and other high-demand devices.

While the battery may still have charge remaining, it often cannot deliver enough instantaneous power to operate the door motor.

Why Chicken Coop Doors Are Especially Vulnerable

Charging Lithium Batteries in Freezing Temperatures

Most lithium-ion batteries should not be charged below 32°F (0°C) unless they include specialized low-temperature charging technology.

Charging a frozen lithium battery can cause metallic lithium to deposit on the anode instead of being properly absorbed. This process, called lithium plating, permanently reduces battery capacity and can shorten the battery's overall lifespan.

Many battery management systems (BMS) prevent charging at low temperatures to protect the battery, meaning a solar-powered door may not recharge effectively during extended periods of freezing weather.

Winter Creates Multiple Challenges at Once

Cold weather affects more than just the battery.

During freezing conditions:

  • Motors become less efficient.

  • Plastic parts become stiffer.

  • Grease thickens.

  • Ice and frost increase resistance on moving components.

  • Snow or frozen debris may add additional load to the door.

A battery that already has reduced output must now power a motor that requires even more energy than usual.

Why External Power Systems Are More Reliable

Automatic chicken coop doors powered by an external 12-volt battery (, solar charging system, or AC power supply generally have a significant advantage.

Larger external batteries typically offer:

  • Much greater energy reserves.

  • Higher current output.

  • Less voltage drop under motor load.

  • Longer operating life between charges.

When paired with a properly sized solar panel or reliable AC adapter, these systems can continue operating through extended periods of cold weather with far greater consistency than small internal rechargeable batteries.
